Abstract:

The "Swiss Classic Design Exhibition", celebrating the 75th anniversary of China-Switzerland diplomatic relations, is presented by the Today Art Museum in partnership with the Embassy of Switzerland in China and several Swiss institutions. Situated in the heart of Europe, Switzerland’s small size belies its profound influence on global innovation and design. The exhibition showcases over 100 representative works spanning 400 years of Swiss design history, from before Switzerland's founding to the present day. Divided into six thematic sections, the exhibition introduces classic Swiss architecture, product, and graphic design, vividly illustrating the evolution of Swiss craftsmanship and design. It also features classic Swiss travel posters and includes a dedicated section on Max Bill, honoring the legacy of this extraordinary Swiss designer. Additionally, the exhibition highlights Switzerland's advancements in design, engineering, healthcare, and sustainability, including innovations like soda water and aluminum foil, underscoring Switzerland’s role at the forefront of technology.

Lecture Topics:

Material Innovation and Craftsmanship in Swiss Design

Building a National Brand: The Evolution of Swiss Design Identity

Swiss design has its roots in rural furniture and evolved under the influence of foreign aesthetics, ultimately shaping a unique national style. Before the 19th century, Switzerland was largely rural, with only 10% of the population living in urban areas as of 1800. Furniture styles at that time were generally simple and utilitarian, though wealthy towns reflected international trends like Gothic and Rococo. In 1848, Switzerland became a federal state, spurring economic growth in industries such as textiles and machinery and encouraging the establishment of design schools and precision manufacturing. The boom in tourism further fueled the furniture industry, with local crafts like woodcarving gaining both domestic and international admiration and becoming more refined over time.

In the early 20th century, Swiss design shifted away from heavy, oversized furniture to embrace functionalism. The Swiss Werkbund was founded in 1913 and played a vital role in promoting quality craftsmanship and practical design. In 1919, the Bauhaus movement emerged in Germany, known for its minimalist aesthetic across art, architecture, and industrial design. Influenced by this movement, Swiss design also incorporated simplicity and functionalism. In 1993, Bauhaus luminary Marcel Breuer chose Swiss company Embru to produce his designs, recognizing their exceptional craftsmanship and production quality. Similarly, Danish architect and designer Verner Panton selected Swiss company Vitra to manufacture his iconic Panton Chair, showcasing a shared dedication to craftsmanship and quality. Therefore, Swiss design history is not only about designers but also manufacturers. Renowned companies like De Sede, Lehni, and Thut continue to be celebrated globally.

Switzerland’s neutrality during the World Wars provided a safe haven for artists, fostering the emergence of movements like Dadaism during World War I. Switzerland’s escape from war and relatively ample funds significantly supported the development and global influence of “Swiss Style” in the 1930s and 1940s. A prime example of Swiss functionalism is Hans Coray’s “Landi Chair,” designed for the 1939 Swiss National Exhibition to blend beauty and practicality.

In the 1950s, Swiss designers embraced the "Good Form" movement led by Max Bill and Willy Guhl, emphasizing simplicity and quality. In the 1970s, with lifestyle changes, Swiss design became more sculptural, lively, and experimental. Today, Swiss design remains at the forefront, focusing on sustainability, durability, and innovation. Iconic products like the modular furniture system USM Haller by USM and Bruno Rey’s “Rey Chair” continue to be popular, while contemporary Swiss designers engage in collaborative, research-based practices to meet evolving social needs. For instance, Panton collaborates with Vitra on a modular sofa showcasing ecological awareness and adaptable design, and the AATB studio combines cutting-edge technology with eco-consciousness in self-designed floor tiles. At the beginning of the exhibition, Guy Meldem’s work repurposes common waste materials into a reimagined, distinctive chair, highlighting the originality in Swiss design.
