Iris Lan
SHSID Achieves Remarkable Results
at the 2025 International Congress
of Basic Science
On July 25, 2025, the 13-day 2025 International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS) successfully concluded in Beijing. This prestigious event was co-sponsored by The People’s Government of Beijing Municipality, the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China, the China Association for Science and Technology, and the International Consortium of Chinese Mathematicians. It brought together top scientists from around the globe—including Fields Medal, Nobel Prize, and Turing Award laureates—renowned scholars, as well as outstanding teachers and students from universities and secondary schools, making it one of the premier academic events in the field of basic sciences worldwide.
Initiated by renowned mathematician Professor Shing-Tung Yau and co-hosted by the International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS) and the Beijing Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Applications (BIMSA), the ICBS High School Student Poster Exhibition was held during the Congress. Focusing on four core disciplines—mathematics, physics, information technology, and economic & financial modeling—the exhibition attracted over 100 poster submissions from students at 58 outstanding secondary schools in China and abroad. After multiple rounds of expert review, 68 posters were selected, with 11 receiving the Excellent Poster Award.
In this high-level competition primarily targeted at high school students, SHSID Middle and Primary School had four student research projects successfully selected, covering mathematics (1), physics (2), and computer science (1). Two of these projects received the Excellent Poster Award. The four selected students were invited to Beijing to present their research in person and engaged in meaningful discussions with leading scientists from around the world, further inspiring their passion for scientific exploration and innovation.
Among the award-winning projects, Chloe Chen’s research titled “Optimization of Primary School Districts under Declining Birth Rates — A Case Study of Changning District, Shanghai” explored the structural imbalance between school zoning and education resource allocation. Using publicly available data and advanced techniques such as K-means clustering, genetic algorithms, and large language models, Chloe proposed multiple optimized zoning schemes, earning the Excellent Poster Award in Computer Science.
Iris Lan’s project, “Acoustic Measurement and Simulation-Based Optimization of School Cafeteria Sound Environment,” focused on addressing noise interference in school dining environments. Based on field acoustic measurements and simulation modeling, her project proposed scientifically sound and practically feasible improvement plans. The project was recognized for its strong theoretical foundation and real-world applicability, earning the Excellent Poster Award in Physics.
This exhibition not only provided a platform for SHSID students to showcase their academic excellence and expand their scientific horizons but also served as a testament to the school’s long-term commitment to cultivating students' research capabilities through high-quality STEM education. Looking ahead, SHSID will continue to build robust platforms for basic science education, encouraging students to explore fearlessly, innovate boldly, and pursue excellence on their scientific journeys.
