The golden-red lion jumped and tumbled to the thunderous drumbeats, the music stirring the air as the sixth graders' "A Walk Through Chinese History" project exhibition kicked off in a lively atmosphere!
This exhibition showcases the learning achievements of 6th grade students in ancient Chinese history this semester. Each history class was responsible for a specific dynasty, presenting their interests and understanding of Chinese history through creative projects. Over the past two months, the students have journeyed through 5,000 years of Chinese history, capturing the unique features and brilliant culture of each dynasty. Their thoughtful ideas and craftsmanship have created an immersive time-travel experience for everyone.
Entering from the skywalk on the 4th floor of Building D, the first things to catch your eye are the themed display boards and models of Chinese cultural relics representing seven elements of civilization. The clear chime of bronze bells, a painted plate bustling with market scenes, and a smiling court lady figurine beckon you to explore. Which dynasty do they belong to? Step into the Chinese history timeline to find out!
The Class in charge of the Xia Dynasty crafted a massive territorial model, depicting the green land that gave birth to the first civilization in China. On the Shang Dynasty display screen, two eye-catching T-shirts stand out—one adorned with the character "Shang" in oracle bone script, the other featuring swirling cloud patterns commonly found on bronze vessels. The Qin Dynasty section showcases bamboo slips inscribed with Qin laws, posters introducing Qin Shi Huang and Li Si, and a clay model of the Great Wall—all demonstrating the power of the Qin Dynasty.
Moving forward through the dynasties, visitors arrive at the Tang Dynasty. The theme board titled "Welcome to the Tang" depicts the cosmopolitan splendor of this golden age. Though the Northern and Southern Song Dynasties were militarily weaker, their aesthetic had a profound influence on art history. The Song display captures this essence perfectly—a single, elegantly brushed character "宋" and sparse bamboo strokes speak volumes.
As you reach the last dynasty, the "Eight Banners" illustrate the unique military system of the period, while Peking Opera masks use color to encode character traits. A replica of the emperor’s "Daily Life Records" offers a rare glimpse into court routines. These meticulously crafted works act as mirrors across time, refracting history’s brilliance and reflecting the passion and creativity of SHSID students for Chinese culture.
If you enter the skywalk from Building C, you'll discover a "Mini History Timeline" featuring the best works from each class. The standout piece from the Three Kingdoms period is a model of a battlefield, vividly recreating the famous Battle of Red Cliffs with numerous figurines and sparks on the river. The map of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, painted on a scroll, slowly unfolds, its intricate lines and vibrant colors telling the story of a chaotic and turbulent era. Other works in the mini timeline include a long scroll cookbook from the Sui Dynasty and blue and white porcelain from the Yuan Dynasty. This delicate and compact historical timeline allows visitors to glimpse the essence of Chinese civilization.
On the reverse side of each dynasty display screen, interactive activities organized by volunteers attracted many students. Participants could decode oracle bone scripts to trace the origins of the Chinese writing system, color terracotta warriors and equip them with replica weapons to restore the original appearance of the mysterious legion, create a Han Dynasty coin from clay, find Marco Polo in bustling streets, and play history-themed board games. Through these activities, students engage with Chinese civilization in an immersive experience.
On the opening day, Mr. Liu Lian, Principal of SHSID Middle and Primary School, along with Vice Principals Ms. Liu Fang and Mr. Shen Tianyuan, attended the exhibition. They attentively listened to the volunteers' introductions of the exhibits, participated in interactive activities, and expressed their appreciation for the students' historical literacy and innovative spirit.
