GRADE 6

On June 6th, 2025, at lunchtime, SHSID Hsi building’s skywalk was filled with celebrations, “hooray”s, and high-fives. It was the SHSID 6th grade’s English PBA (Project-Based Assessment) showcase, where many students were proudly displaying the fascinating TIME magazines that they had created. Like a hearty bowl of soup, the event was a concoction of just the right ingredients: students’ hard work, creativity, imagination, and celebration! The magazines, printed large on canvases and exhibited along the hallway, were eye-popping and attracted the curiosity and excitement of teachers and students from many grade levels, who grabbed ballots and voted for their favorite magazine.

This showcase was the final step of a six-week project in which students researched a real-life influential figure, drafted a fictional interview with them, and designed and printed a real magazine to contain their interview. Many of the magazines on display went above and beyond, complete with introductions and scene setting, fictional advertisements on the back covers, bar codes for retail inventory, and additional articles like a real magazine!

After the votes were counted, the first place prize went to Vivian Li from class 6-10, second place went to Grace Yin from class 6-6, and there was a five-way tie for third place! These students put prodigious amount of effort into the impressive work and had set a wonderful example of student achievement.

Through interviews with several award-winning students, it is clear that they not only improved their skills in layout design, image-text coordination, and scene setting, but also made significant progress in imitating tones and literary writing. Although they encountered challenges such as mismatched images and layouts, as well as difficulties in background design, the students overcame these obstacles through continuous effort and guidance from their teachers. They all expressed that this project helped develop their comprehensive abilities and brought them a strong sense of achievement and enjoyment.

GRADE 7

This week, our seventh graders transformed the hallways into a vibrant courtroom of ideas, showcasing their deep dive into justice, bias, and the power of the press. The "Trials of the Century" exhibit featured student-written newspaper articles, dramatic reenactments, and interactive displays exploring three landmark cases: the Scopes "Monkey Trial," 12 Angry Men, and the Keyton free speech debate.

Visitors marveled at the colorful newsprint articles—professionally printed on real newspaper stock—lining the walls. Each piece demonstrated the students' grasp of journalistic balance as they dissected the trials' controversies.

The highlight was a special edition newspaper compiling the best articles from each Grade 7 English class, printed on real newsprint and delivered to participants. Nearby, a Q&A station invited visitors to debate controversial topics, while video clips showed students performing dramatic courtroom scenes, complete with gavels and heated cross-examinations.

"This isn't just about history," explained teacher Mr. Wendell. "It's about seeing how justice, persuasion, and truth play out in today's world." As visitors left, many remarked how the showcase didn't just display work—it made them rethink their own assumptions.

GRADE 8

On June 11th, 2025, the Grade 8 English Group hosted a PBA showcase and reading activity on the 6th floor of C building during lunch break, exhibiting the excellent magazines made by students for their PBAs. The main objective of the PBA was for the students to find an event that had influenced a particular culture and reflect upon the impact. During the activity, teachers guided and encouraged students to look through the magazine collections, find one of their favorites, and reflect upon what the piece did well. Students were also provided with the opportunity to write down their own response towards the unit essential question—“what is culture” on a board displayed inside the room.

The activity concluded very successfully, with students across the grade fully engaging and exploring the different events that happened throughout history and how the events have shaped a specific culture that we observe today. The students enjoyed the works of their peers greatly while developing a deeper understanding on what culture is, how it evolves, and the messages of people behind every culture. The form of learning through communication between students brings new perspectives, which will help enhance the students’ knowledge of themselves and the world that they live in, building a strong connection to the purpose of this unit.
