At 15:45 on March 10th, a lively and passionate interschool football friendly match kicked off at Yew Wah International Education School’s (YWIES) campus in Lin’gang. The two competing sides were the SHSID Lin’gang Campus and YWIES Shanghai Lin’gang. Although the participants were all primary school students in the second and third grades, their enthusiasm and vitality demonstrated on the field made this match an extremely exciting event for the exchange of friendship and sportsmanship between the two schools.
The young players from SHSID Lin’gang Campus, under the patient guidance of Coach Ren Guangxi and Coach Parkhouse, were bouncing around and full of excitement and anticipation as they stepped onto the green pitch, just like a group of little warriors about to go into battle. During the warm-up before the game, their small figures were full of energy. Ms. Qian Wenlian, representing the Physical Education Department of Shanghai High School, came to Lin’gang to observe the match. Her eyes were full of encouragement and expectation as she watched and cheered on the young players.
As soon as the starting whistle blew, the young players from the SHSID Lin’gang Campus charged like a small army launching a fierce offensive. Despite their young age and small stature, they proved quick, agile and capable with the football. On offense, the forwards displayed great on and off-ball awareness, while the midfielders played with tremendous energy. They ran with speed, shifting their feet quickly to follow the ball; once possessing the ball, they passed it around the pitch with considerable skill and continued to fight for each possession. The offense retained control over the general rhythm and pace of the game, just like little generals calmly commanding the battlefield.
On defense, the young players were equally unyielding. The defenders united closely, holding hands and standing shoulder to shoulder to form a solid "Little Great Wall" whenever YWIES had a free kick. They bravely blocked the opponent's attacks time and time again. Even if they fell down, they would immediately get back up, pat the grass off their jerseys, and continue to fight. The young goalkeeper was especially focused, his eyes fixed on the trajectory of the football. His intensity proved intimidating to the opposing side – he successfully defended the goal several times as the team's "last line of defense."
During the game, the young players from each side demonstrated a tenacious level of competitiveness and, simultaneously, an admirable spirit of sportsmanship. Every contest for possession of the ball was filled with a bit of "tension," but the players still maintained a friendly countenance throughout the match, respected the referee's decisions, and would even give each other a hand when they fell down, showing a level of maturity beyond their years that made possible the game’s competitive, yet congenial atmosphere.
With the final whistle sounding, this interschool football friendly match, full of laughter and sweat, came to a close. During the game, the fighting spirit, teamwork, and love for football shown by the young players proved the most shining highlights of this event.
Through this match, the children from SHSID Lin’gang Campus and YWIES Shanghai Lin’gang enhanced their mutual understanding and friendship and, moreover, made it possible for a strong spirit of sport to take root in their young hearts. It is believed that, in the future, the two schools will continue to carry out interesting exchanges in sports and other areas, supporting the children’s all-round development and health consciousness.
